Reading widely and developing a lifelong
love for reading are important to the success of every
student. Research shows that independent reading
has a positive impact on student achievement.
We want students at Red Rock to develop the
“habit” of reading independently beyond their
school assignments. Reading Counts
is a reading motivation and management program that
helps encourage and monitor independent reading.
Students select and read a wide variety
of books independently (or sometimes as part of a
group). After reading, the
student takes a computerized quiz that helps assess
whether he or she completed
and understood the book. The management system tracks
each student’s participation
and performance on the quizzes.
In the early grades, Reading Counts
is used as an enrichment activity for students who
are reading above grade-level
expectations. In the upper grades is a used as a partial
requirement for the reading
grade each trimester.
