Reading Counts - Lexile Guidelines:

Students have earned a lexile score on their MAP tests.  This number identifies the students' independent reading level.  It reflects the difficulty of text a student is able to independently comprehend.  Research has shown that students increase their literacy skills most effectively and efficiently when they spend time reading books at their lexile level.

To give students a variety of materials to choose from, they may choose a book that is  within a 100 point range; 50 points higher or lower than their lexile.  For example if the lexile score is 840, they may read materials that are as low as 790 or as high as 890.

When a student reaches 90 % comprehension on their Reading Counts tests, they should move up a level and begin reading at a higher lexile.
